First ! …. after the 4th guy but hey ….. Change the fishes ? Well you are a fish keeper then. I'm an aquarist most common animals living in water like fish shrimps clams snails and lots of plants in real substrate and aiming for like not touching it or as little as possible for like 5 years or more like in nature. Fish lives and dies in natural causes and in the mean time they breed reproduce and grow up and find it's place in the community. I like 1 set up and see how it maintain it self as in nature and the fishes as they born or hatch and grow and get big then reproduce and dies of natural causes. Also all other aquatic life too like in nature. Was good to see you Thomas !

Good video. I'm really thinking about putting together a low tech planted tank with angles. I know a guy who can supply platinum angles, they're so so beautiful. Any advice you could give would great! ????????????

What did you do with the sump after it turned off? Did you empty and re fill it? Didn't the bacteria turn bad in that time?

If you do a saltwater tank you should do a shark in it (like a horn or cat shark, not a black tip reef)

Not sure how he maintains 40ppm nitrate level w 4 water changes a year…there are no plants in the setup so how are nitrates being removed from the tank..

Planted or salt water. Big cichlids while pretty…..makes for a boring tank. Too much variations in fish make it seem messy. Noahs ark style.

I would stay clear of a planted tank ……your tank is way to tall for light penetration

I have been anxiously waiting for this  update.  It was worth the wait.  Great effort, Thomas.  I am curious…as are others… how you can get away with only 4 water changesin one year with just 40 nitrate levels. Even more perplexing is how you can add so muchtop off water without raising your hardness level, which is particularly challengingfor South American Amazon species (filamentous barbs and giant danios excepted). As for radically changing the tank…I say NO.  It's great as it is. Give it another year…withfollow-up, of course.  My only suggestion is to get your daughter on the next video. Also, could you do at least a 5 minute video dedicated to visualizing the fish.  As always, Thomas, keep on tanking…and thanx for the follow-up.

    Why did you reupload

A little constructive criticism on the video itself….. maybe instead of showing so much of you talking so much, show more video of the fish and full tank?

I completely new to this. What keeps control of the water level in the sump and is it the same for different sump sizes?

  • comment-avatar
    David C 5 months ago

Recommendation: Place a cover, even a simple one over you main sump. It will greatly reduce your evaporation.
