For now, no plants. Maybe some jungle val or anubias in the future, but I am really gunning for low maintenance. I may add leaf litter or other tannin filled jungle junk to make it more of a blackwater tank… we shall see!

Can you make a video for Brakish water? Including a Puffer fish like the Figure 8? I would really love that. I'm really interested on how to start that up

Total head-fake, Thomas. You really had me thinking you were going goldfish at one point. As it is, those large cichlids aren't the choices I would have made, but this should still be a fun tank. And your daughter's obvious enjoyment was worth the world. Also, I wish we had a Big Al's in Los Angeles. πŸ™‚

Wow. Never would have guessed mostly SA's. I thought for sure you were going for Mbuna or Haps. You need a chocolate cichlid.

I'm sorry guys, but you choose the fish for a tank by what kind of requirements they have in regards to temperature, ph, food – so typically fish of the same habitat (river)

I think that depends heavily on your proficiency with breeding them, the
average cost of that particular species in your area, the demand in
your area, and whether or not you are going to factor in running costs.

What would be the total cost for complete setup minus the live stock if I were to place an order through Big Al's?

    1. Jeff Brady

One other note maybe lighting that would support low to medium light plants. I would be using the setup as a fresh water planted tank

Haven't forgotten about you– Thomas is just wrapping up some other things but has this on his list! We won't be able to include the aquarium/stand obviously, as we don't ship glass, but the filter, media, sump, lights, etc will all be tallied up!

Thomas – loved the series, love the fish, BUT it shocked the hell out of me to see you add your new fish directly into your tank with fresh water from store stock water. I've been a Big Al's fan for years, and they are the go to people I turn to if I have a problem with my tank fish or whatever, and the one thing I was told was never add your fish directly into your tank without at least adding some water from your own tank into the stock water from the store, as it can throw the fish into shock. So to see you do just that, nearly knocked me off my chair. Please explain!

Hi need an up Thomas how the tank going ?
How's the marinepure going? I have just picked up 3 gallon of spheres for my indoor turtle pond and just found out marinepure is made with/from Aluminum. I have asked CerMedia directly but had an answer do you now if it is safe to be used in my turtle filters?

Hi, Great series and an awesome tank. I have a problem and maybe you could help. All of a sudden my well water has high nitrates and therefore my tanks have high nitrates. Any idea what I should do? RO/DI then add buffers? Seachem denitrate? Biopelllet reactor? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you

Yikes! Yes, RODI is a good solution. Follow it up with Kent RO Right to remineralize it before using for the aquariums.

I just binge watched the whole series – WAY fun, and what a beautiful setup!!! I'd be interested to know the entire cost, and at some point would you give us a demo of that light bar you got? I'd love to see what it does with the tank completed.
Thanks for your time and information. I learned a lot – this made for a fun evening!

Hey Thomas ! I stayed up half the night and watched all 11 episodes of the Mega-Buildseries with my tank mates in their 80 Gallon home. Their opinion is "blub gurgle blubblub" etc. which translates to they want to move to Thomas' basement and be with someone who appreciates them like your daughter. Who can blame them as I toowould love to be schooling with a gang of mascara barbs.Β  While I've been in the hobbyfor over 65 years, last night was totally riveting and not without a lot of laughs.Β  Yourcontributions to the hobby are priceless and I'll be anxiously awaiting for short andlong term updates…and, Oh yeah, keep on tankin',Β Β  Ed from Phoenix

It definitely could! I would argue it depends on your taste. I personally am not a fan of white sand, and always prefer a warmer tone as I feel it breathes more life into the aquarium.
