Big Al's beautiful tank beautiful the way it's coming out. Question for you, can those bio squares be cut to put inside canister filters?

I use pool sand for substrate & driftwood for decor. Pulled my plants out of the aquarium because I have Monster Fish.

    1. Thomas B

Pool sand works, but has its drawbacks (as all sand does). What kind of monsters do you have? They destroyed the plants? Tough break, but it happens! Anubias are built strong to last long though, and can usually work in tanks with larger fish since you can mount them to driftwood rather than plant them in the substrate.

Fantastic list! Jardini are great, although one of the more aggressive arowana species. The two cats are awesome as well! Feel free to link pics πŸ™‚

I am really glad I bit the bullet and purchased open slot wire duct; it made a world of difference for cable management under the stand.

Looking good. I can't wait to see this start to get filled with plants and fish. Also curious as to what this mystery decoration is… BTW, you'd better watch out for your daughter: she stole the show from you, man. πŸ˜‰

Hahaha yeah she is adorable, that wee little gal. I think a few people in the comments have a good idea of what the mystery decoration might be!

Haha, for trickle filters they actually still get used quite often! I won't be using the sump in a wet/dry trickle format, so I used media designed to work submersed. The porosity and surface area of newer medias far exceeds bio balls these days πŸ˜‰

Thomas- do you really not have a Python J-hook at home?! I'll forward that email to you when your people put it on sale every other week or so. Hey, I love the electrical work below, especially the cable tray and rocker panel switch setup. I'm inspired and spend more money after watching your videos. Well done as always, good sir.

You mentioned that you are waiting for something that is being shipped. So am I and I have been waiting for weeks with no sign if it is actually coming or not. They actually told me in an email that they could not determine when it might arrive….but that it would eventually get here. I am thinking that maybe it fell of the ship from Serbia. Who knows?
I am not trying to slam any company but I am wondering if we are waiting on the same place?

    Reply
    1. Thomas B

Hey Mike. Yeah we most likely are. The owners are great guys though, and they won't let you down. The postal system from Serbia to Canada however, is a bit… disappointing. Of 7 packages shipped early Dec, I received 6 by Jan 15th. One shows it left originating country with zero updates to tracking since then. Shipper has little leverage other than to claim it a missing package once X number of days has passed. The package I am currently waiting on was shipped much later, and took far less time to hit Ontario (actually should be delivered in the next few days). I have to assume that the holiday season really tossed a wrench into the shipping schedule for the first lot of packages. Hang tight, Mike. Hopefully we both get our 'missing' packages soon!

      Reply
    2. Thomas B

Just a quick update. One package shipped 2016/12/02 has just now updated to "arrived in Canada" 2017/01/23. Thanks to the postal system for taking nearly 2 months on that one!
Hopefully that gives you some hope that yours will arrive soon.

      Thanks for the info!

When I check the USPS package tracking site, it says that the item is waiting to ship but that it has not left the original post office in Serbia. The woman that I have talked to from the company I ordered from says that is wrong though and that it has left but that they just don't update the site. She says it is somewhere along the way but that she can not determine where or when I might receive it. I last talked to her over a week ago.

      Reply
    4. Thomas B

Yeah, the problem is that if you are tracking it through USPS, you won't
get any accurate info until it reaches the USA. Sucks that it is taking
so long, but it will be well worth the wait!

how often should or will you change de*nitrate media in your tank? where is the best place to put that media since it works best in a low flow water area. putting it in a HOB filter or a canister filter would be to much flow ?

    Reply
    1. Thomas B

Personally I tend to change out 1/3 of my bio media yearly (sometimes 6 months if it has been a particularly dirty aquarium). De*nitrate is designed well, so it can work even in a hang-on or canister, however, I find it more effective if you slow down the flow through the media.

      Reply
    1. Thomas B

Sure, you certainly can. Carbon may help extend the life of the Chemi-Pure, but ultimately the Chemi-Pure will do an amazing job on its own, so the carbon is a tad overkill.

    2. english warrior

Thomas B thank u very much. ive just brought an media reactor will chemi pure be ok in there? or will it work just as good in an external fliter? thanks

      Reply
    3. Thomas B

Either way is fine – Whether it is a media reactor, hang-on filter, canister filter, or otherwise, as long as you are forcing water through the media, it will do a good job.

I've been told its always easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission… but asking for forgiveness from the curb isn't fun either hahahaha.

Hi Thomas, I have been recycling my 10gal tank for a couple of weeks now I dialed the water in and took your suggestions on adding a little food even though I have not added fish yesterday I bought from PetSmart 2 Corey Catfish and 2 Creamciles(SP?). This morning I found one who's in the process of dieing the Molly the other isn't eating or doing much else and the Corey's are just sitting on the bottom I've even put a little pinch of food nothing. I just did a water change I used Prime, Stress coat and drops of bacteria. I'm just sick over this ?… trying to prove to my husband I can do this so I can get a bigger tank but if I keep killing my fish I will have to give up. I've changed my filtration system with my last try with fish (dead). I don't know what I'm doing wrong. And I trust you if you tell me if I'm the grim reaper of fish. Thank you advance….

Me again..I brought a water sample my pH is very low for Molly's so the guy who helped me who seemed knowledgeable said to buy API pH equalizer and that I shouldn't use Prime but use API StressEz. I do have a Ammonia spike (you've informed on YouTube) I am going to do another water change tonight (it would be twice today). Crazy

      Reply
    2. Thomas B

So sorry to hear you're having such trouble πŸ™ If your pH is naturally low, you can always stick to species that prefer a lower pH level so that you don't have to constantly buffer any water you use for the aquarium (you'll have to always add buffer to any top off water or water prepared for a water change). As for the ammonia, if it is at a dangerous level for the fish, a small water change is advisable to get it into the safe zone (don't aim for 0 as your tank will never cycle if you always remove the ammonia before the bacteria can establish and begin to convert it to less harmful nitrate). It sounds like you may have added too many fish at once, rather than adding them slowly over time so that the ammonia doesn't spike. It is a common mistake so don't feel too bad. Key thing to do now is to allow your filter to establish that beneficial bacteria.

I take care of a family aquriaum and was going to buy two more refillable carts for the side mount filter. I am wondering what you suggest to fill them with? I was thinking filling the first two up with marineland premium carbon, but am hesitant on the last two, I'm thinking bio but what you've shown so far looks to be to big to fit one of those carts, any suggestions, and can you place Teo different filter medal one on the right one on the back left?

    1. Thomas B

For bio, the de*nitrate from seachem may fit quite well. It is fairly small. Another option is Eheim Substrat Pro which is another amazing media for biological. And yes you certain can use two different medias in the same filter.

That my friend, depends on what your heart desires most! I always recommend going with what truly interests you, so that you don't get bored and eventually abandon the hobby. If you simply can't decide, then just way the pros/cons of each. For example, reptiles require heat lamps and often need live food. Amphibians may not need heat lamps, but generally benefit from constant misting and live foods, whereas most aquariums with fish do not need live foods, but water changes are a must.
