I've been using this filter for many years…I actually have one that I have been using for more than 5 years…this filter runs very strong...filters very well…and is very easy to use…the media is simple to replace and parts if needed are very easy to order and can be purchased from Big Als….I use this filter on any tank that is 30 gallons or less because I like to have double the recommended water flow…in my larger tanks I like to go 3 times or more….the price is great and there is no use on spending 1 dollar more on any other filter because they will NOT do a better job…maybe the same results…with this filter the carbon and the floss is in the same media cartridge…it is as easy to clean as another filter or easier…Must have filter if this is your aquarium is 30 gallons or smaller...crystal clear and odor free water!!!!

For the price this is a great filter. The cartridges change out very easily, and it can hold two filters. You can also purchase a blank cartridge and fill it with your own media (ie. activated charcoal). Keeps my 46G tank crystal clear. The downside to this is that the bio-wheel can get very noisy, as well as a lot of vibration noises while hanging on the tank. To combat the vibration I have had to install a soft sponge for the filter to lean on, this helped cut down the noise. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to stop the noise of the bio-wheel.

Comments about Penguin Power Filter - 350B:

I purchased two of these to replace two older whisper 5 power filters that I have had for many years but could no longer get parts for. Basically the same thing except for the bio-wheels. These have just as much flow as the old ones I replaced but a lot louder. I am thinking about returning them but other reviews say the same about other brands as well as far as power filters go.

Comments about Penguin Power Filter - 350B:

this is a good filter, dont get me wrong. but make sure the fish and tank you have will match this product. i HAD 2 of these running in my 70 gallon tank with just 1 oscar fish in it. each one is rated for 75 gallons alone. i would never recomend a filter like this for large fish or tanks. the bio wheel doesnt make contact with enough water, so it doesnt filter the ammonia and nitrite out of the water like a cannister would. most of the water gets cleaned of large debres but slips under the bio wheel and misses that main stage of filtration. you get what you pay for, and just make sure this is for a small tank with just a few fish. 3-6 inches is the largest fish i would get with this filter. maybe just a couple of them.

          Decent, Reliable

Penguin makes decent reliable filters. Never rely on just one filter...penguins move a lot water across the surface of the tank. Great oxygenation, decent mechanical and biological filtration. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING THE OPTIONAL MEDIA HOLDER for these penguins. That way you don't always have to use their throw-aways with the carbon, you can make your own with blue filter material.

I've used Penguin 330 with bio wheel for over 6 years. I started with a 30g tank, the upgraded to 55g and added a second 330B. If you keep you tank full, they are super quiet, but if the level goes under the filters water fall, the water will splash, to some this is annoying, to me it's nice relaxing water dripping sound, similar to a small water stream. If you get a power failure, they will automatically start as long as your tank is full; if your water level is more than 5 inches from the top you will have trouble.
Some will tell you the mechanical filter is too small compared to AquaClear, and they are correct, but one thing you need to consider, the face of the filter touching the water going in to the filter is larger on the Penguin. Imagine a parking lot with two lanes to enter (Aquaclear) against Penguin 330 (8 lanes). The penguin will work just fine if you rinse the mechanical filter every week (depending on your bioload). Filter cartridge are expensive, but you can rinse them several times or you can purchase clamshell cartridges and use your own mechanical media.

I just put 2 of these on a 33 gallon tank. (Thanks Big Al's!) If there is a better filter for the money, I haven't found it. My last Penguin power filters lasted 10 years and I expect these to be just as durable. They are not completely silent, but they are not bad. When the power goes off they start themselves as soon as it comes back on so I never even know it happened if I'm not around. Just hang it on the tank, fill it with water one time, plug it in, and never worry. No hoses, clamps, remote canisters, etc. Filter cartridges are widely available and couldn't be easier to change. Just walk up to the tank, lift the plastic lid, jerk the old one out and give it a few seconds to drain into the housing, slide the new one ito place, and replace the lid. Everything is right there in your face. They can also be rinsed a couple of times to hold down replacement cost. To save big bucks just order a bunch of cartridges from Big Al's when you purchase the unit. Also, the BIO-wheels on my last Penguin power filters spun for 10 years and never gave me a minute's trouble. These things are so simple, and they work! I would not consider a filter without them.

I find that over time they can be noisy but it really depends on the maintenance you perform on the unit. In my opinion the Aquaclear Power Filters are my choice for quietest power filters.

In essence the 200B will do more tank turn overs per hour then the 150B. It is important to know that even though the 200B is filtering more water doesn't mean that you should do less maintenance such as fewer water changes.

Are media bags compatible with the penguin 350B? And do the media bags remove larger particles (like filter pads) as well as the disposable filters? What size bag (if any) would you recommend? Are the refillable cartridges OK on their own filled with carbon?

Unfortunately the media bags will not work well with Penguins or Emperor filters as the cartridges fit in a slotted area. These units do have a carbon/media container available.

                  Q:

I am "rescuing" a neglected 20 gallon tank and want to find the right filter for it (there are currently fish in the tank). It was run in the past with a Penguin filter that looks to be the equivalent of the 350 (two sides, two bio-wheels) but according to your site, that is far too large/powerful for that tank. The old filter does not appear to be salvageable. (It actually looks more like the Emperor 400, though smaller, than the current model Penguins so I have doubt that I can even get parts for it.) The tank is 24"L, 12.5"W and 17"H. Which Penguin Power Filter would you recommend for it?

It would just meet the minimum requirements for this size of aquarium. The total volume of an aquarium that size is approximately 45 gallons. It would be recommended the use of a power head in combination. The Penguin 200 B Power Filter will handle an aquarium of up to 50 Gallons in size.

The Marineland Penguin 200 Power Filter will be able to handle an aquarium up to 50 gallon in size. Because it is a hex aquarium it maybe recommended to add a power head to aquarium to be able to allow the Penguin Power filter to catch and filter more debris.
