Details
The API Filstar XP-XL is an ultra-powerful multi-stage filter designed to produce perfectly balanced, crystal clear water. This highly versatile 450 gph system is easy to use and maintain, and operates so silently it can be used anywhere. It offers several set-up options making it adaptable to fit the individual needs of your aquarium, and includes a host of innovative and convenient features.

The Filstar XP-XL is designed with a one-time, self-priming system for easy start-up. It primes in seconds, without the need for hand-pumping or messy manual-siphoning. It also features a high media capacity, and includes 4 large media baskets that can be customized depending on the unique needs of your aquarium and its inhabitants. Media baskets are easily accessible for hassle-free maintenance, and feature integrated carry handles for added convenience.

The advanced design of the XP-XL ensures that water consistently flows through the contained media baskets instead of around them for bypass-free circulation. This means that only fully filtered, crystal clear water is circulated back into your aquarium. A Quick-Disconnect with Self-Locking Water Shutoff is also incorporated into the design. When opened, the quick-disconnect valve stops water flow allowing you to disengage the assembly and perform leak-free regularly scheduled maintenance.

The XP-XL filter was designed for long-lasting operation, and is fabricated using only the highest quality materials. This durable and dependable filter is more than capable of standing up to the rigors of everyday use without compromising performance. The clever design of the XP-XL provides effortless access to media baskets, impeller, and shaft for cleaning, maintenance, or replacement. Lastly, a large integrated rubber base completely dampens vibrations to ensure silent operation, while providing a sturdy grip to keep your Filstar XP-XL in place.

The API Filstar XP-XL allows users to fully customize the configuration of filter media to best suit the requirements of the intended application. The XP-XL includes the following combination of advanced biological, chemical, and mechanical filtration media to provide exceptional water quality and promote optimal fish health:

Micro-Filtration Pad - This ultra-fine media captures the finest particulate matter (e.g. waste and sediment) from your aquarium. Helps remove cloudy water for a sparkling "polish".

Bio-Chem Stars (sample) - Establishes optimal and long-lasting biological balance. Provides extensive surface area for the growth of beneficial bacterial colonies which remove ammonia and nitrite.

Bio-Chem Zorb - Removes organic aquarium pollutants including colors, odors, heavy metals, and toxic gases. Also removes light-blocking impurities for improved growth of corals in saltwater and plants in freshwater.

Foam 20 ppi - This coarse foam pad filters larger waste particles such as food and plant remains from you aquarium system. The first step in filtration. Replace every 3 months.

Foam 30 ppi - This coarse foam pad filters small waste particles such as food remains and small gravel excrements. Use after Foam 20 filter pad and replace every 3 months.

The API Filstar XP-XL is a feature-packed, multi-stage system that delivers highly effective biological, chemical, and mechanical filtration for a variety of diverse applications. The XP-XL is ideal for use with both freshwater and saltwater aquariums systems up to 265 gallons in size.

Just keeps on going!

I've had the XP2 for 2 years now, only regret is I should have bought the XP3. It does a great job, one of the quietest filters on the market.

I bought this filter for my FOWLR aquarium and, when it's not leaking, it works quite well. The filter media is easy to find in stores and is simple to replace. The set up initially wasn't difficult and didn't take very long at all.

But if I so much as look at it the wrong way it seems to start leaking from everywhere and anywhere. Not to mention just about an hour ago it started to literally fall apart. For the amount of money these places want for this product I wouldn't go near it again. In fact if it was free I probably wouldn't touch it then either.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this filter to anyone. One day it's fine, the next it's leaking like nobody's business. I shouldn't have to prep for a flood every time I need to clean it!

Comments about Filstar Canister Filter - XP-L:

I have a 90 gallon tank in which I relied on 2 overflow filters. I have heard raving reviews from other cichlid keepers who have stated they would never go to overflow again. I have had issues with the noise so I decided to try the canister and I am overjoyed at the difference.

Installation seemed overwhelming when reading the booklet however, was so incredibly easy and took at most an hour. The most time consuming part of the installation was rinsing the carbon clear!

This canister has been running now on my tank for 2 days and the difference in my water is amazing. When the box says your water will be clear you will have no idea how clear until you see it for yourself. I`m shocked! As for the noise, I have to keep checking it to ensure it is working. I cant hear it running what so ever!

Another bonus is that there are a large amount of media compartments for you to use what ever it is you desire.

I would recommend this canister to anyone!

Comments about Filstar Canister Filter - XP-L:

I have been using a XP2 for about 5 years, first on my old 75 gal and moved it to my new 125 gal. It has proven to be very dependable, even with my Non-regular cleanings. I just bought the "fix" kit to bring it back to almost new condition.

I wanted to add another filter for my 125 gal and looked at them all, and in the end I couldn't beat the price & past experience of this product. I am currently waiting for my new Large (XP3) to arrive to work together to keep my tank clean.

Like many canisters, the ability to change in different types of filtration is easy to do. Between these two filters I expect my fish to be very happy in their home.

constantly spits out micro bubbles, have changed impeller, and all o-ring and hoses (connections included) rebuilt the WHOLE THING for nothing as it still spits bubbles. Mars fish care does not care just insists I am doing something wrong. Will not admit that I have a lemon. would not even send me new oring kit (had to buy it myself) and the kicker is it is not a yr old! The part that is the worst is Mars will do nothing nor did they help in any way!

Comments about Filstar Canister Filter - XP-M:

I have been keeping fish for over ten years now. I bought this filter (the XP2) from Big Al's around 8 years ago. There were portions of time (a year here, 6 months there) when it was not running, but it has been providing faithful filtration for me for well over 5 years run time now. It has never broken down.

One thing you must keep in mind with any canister filter is that if it is not cleaned, it will not perform well. This applies to all of them, and is no different in this case. it is not difficult to clean by any stretch, just takes longer.

The filter basket provide a lot of room for media - I ended up going purely with biological and mechanical filtration in it (no carbon) and it does awesome because of the amount of media you can squeeze in there.

If there was one downfall, it would be that when it refills itself, you need to shake it a bit to release all of the air from the body of the filter, or else it will be loud until it does this on its own. Not really a downside, just something to know. I would buy it again in a heartbeat, and am in fact planning on buying two more (XP3s) for a 125 gal tank.

                  5 stars!

This is a very effective filter! I have an xp3 and aquaclear 110 for my 75 gallon and the water is pristine. You can't beat Big Al's price on this filter either, petsmart sells it for $189 + tax. Mine is a little bit on the noisy side but nothing I can't live with. All in all great filter and great price!

Comments about Filstar Canister Filter - XP-L:

I use the xp3 large filter on my 120 gallon 48x24x24 cichlid aquarium. I have an Oscar, some blood parrots, a tinfoil barb and much more... the fish are still pretty small so I might need to upgrade filtration when the fish get larger. For now filtration is more than enough but when the fish are larger I might need to add a hand on back to add more filtration. On the package it sys it is rated for 175 gallons... unless you have a really light stock i would not use it on a tank larger than 125 gallons. I like that this filter is quiet and effective. Also it's large size gives space for lots of filter media for good bacteria to grow on. Mine is stuffed with sea sponges, bath scrubbers ceramic rings and pads and biostars stuff. You don't need the carbon because all it does is make the water clear and make it appear cleaner... what you really need is biological filtration... Although it is a good filter I have had a problem with 1 of the 2 i have(I also have one on a 75 gallon turtle tank with a red eared slider turtle)... Air is getting in the filter... It was partly my fault by not doing something correctly but it was partly the compenys fault for a cheap design on the shut off handle valve thingy... In conclusion great filter but has its cons too... not as good as ehiems... although it is not far behind ehiems... good bang for its buck and my xp3 is very effective and powerful...

Comments about Filstar Canister Filter - XP-L:

I have has the XP3 for 8 years now and have nothing bad to say about it at all. I started with a XP, but wanted a bit more power for dirty goldfish in my 29 gal tank. I was able to upgrade to the XP3 with a sale and got it for less money than I originally paid for my XP! I have since moved on from goldfish and have a huge amount of fish in my 29 gallon tank (12 cory's, 5 neon tetras, 5 black-neon tetras, 6 gold barbs, 6 cherry barbs, 2 black shirt tetras, 2 serpae tetras, 2 bristlenose plecos at 6" each, 1 chocolate pleco, a black mystery snail, 1 king beta, and various plants ONLY beacause this XP3 helps keep the water super clean. I have had to to replace the seal rings, the impeller and the tubes (due to a snail infestation, not due to any fault of the workmanship), these did not happen at one time, the replacements were so easy to find here at Big Al's and my XP is 8 years old so I would expect some wear and tear. I would HIGHLY recoment ANY of the XP filters for your aquarium. They are wonderful and very easy to maintain. I would not go with any other canister filter than the Filstar.

                        Q:

My canister is roughly six months old. It worked great in the beginning but now all it does is pull the water from one end and pushes it out the other, leaving my tank water very cloudy. When I take the filter out to be cleaned I'm not seeing much waste in it. Can you advise me why it's doing this?

filter is almost 1 yr old, having micro bubble issues. Have changed all O-rings and impeller and checked all seals and clamps. Nothing seems to fix the issue. have followed all instructions for cleaning and start ups to a T. Mars fish care will not help me at all even made me pay for o-ring kit(bought at Big Als). Everything is set up properly but still have constant flow of bubbles. Before I use it as a trash can do you have any suggestions? Do they come with any flow control valves?
I have a small tank (<30G) that needs very high levels of bio/mech filtration but a low flow rate back into the tank. Is that possible?

                          A:

I would recommend using an Eheim Classic Canister filter such as the 2213. By restricting the flow on such a large filter meant for a much larger aquarium you are creating pressure on the motor and that will result in reducing the longevity of the motor. The Eheim Classic canister filters have much slower flow rates for superior biological filtration.

It comes with everything you need except biological media. For biological media you can use the stars from rena, ceramic rings, bio max, or any biological media.

The foam 30 and 20 need to be in the bottom basket and then you will have the stars or ceramic rings or the combination of the two in the top basket with the separation grid and biochem zorb and fine filter above. There are many choices you can go with. I personally like Seachem Prime and Stability. Prime will remove all chlorine, chloramine, heavy metals, and ammonia! Stability will ensure that you do not have any hiccups with your nitrogen cycle.

On the Rena xp3 the instructions say the canister needs to be at least 24 inches below the surface of the water. Are the 24" to the top of the canister or to the bottom of the canister from the water level in the tank??
