Details
Effective biological filtration is the key to a healthy aquarium. Marineland's patented bio-wheel is a very effective filtration design. The bio-wheel filter has become the most widely used because it is the ideal culture site for the beneficial bacteria responsible for biological filtration. When put together with emperor's dual pump action and three-stage filtration (biological, chemical, and mechanical), you get power and performance that unmatched by other power filters. This filter is suitable for aquariums up to 80 gallons in size (400 GPH). The manufacturer recommends this filter for both freshwater and saltwater applications.

I use this emporer in a 125 gal tank in conjunction with a aquaclear 110 I wasn't sure if it would keep up.It works better than expected with the prices of the aqua 110 I decided to try one out and will be purchasing another 400!You do have to rinse the pads in about 3 weeks or so and then replace in a few more weeks. However it is very simple to do so.You do have to be more careful when cleaning.

Easy to set up amd maintain, but it is not suitable for an enviornment where quietness is required such as a bedroom or office. Marineland has changed the design recently, and I think they messed up when it comes to the sound it makes. You are able to adjust the spray bars to eliminate most of the bubbling and flowing water noise, but there is a loud mechanical grinding comming from the impeller that I can't get to go away.

Comments about Emperor Power Filter - 400:

I use two of these filters on my 100 Gallon. I have been using the emperor 400's for a few months (more then 3, less then 8) A lot of people say they are very noisy and they hear mechanical grinding, I do not feel like these filters are 100% silent, but I have the tank (and filters) in my bedroom and I am never bothered by the sounds, in fact, I find it very soothing to hear the waterfall effect it has. When the filter starts to make noise, clean it! a little cleaning is all it needs. I have only had to clean mine once in the past couple months because of algae growth and it was unappealing to me, the noise it started to make wasn't bothering me, but when I cleaned it I noticed a difference in how quiet it was. If sound really bothers you, this may not be for you, but personally, I find my air pump is much louder(Air pump is a whisper 100).. Also filter media is super cheap I don't use activated carbon unless I need it, so I just buy bulk filter floss (From Big Als) and I am set for a few months, replacing the filter floss every third day.

Two in a row that were extremely loud and annoying despite all efforts to correct including ordering at additional expense a replacement impeller. Whatever Marineland changed (if they changed anything) has taken what was a reliable and quiet filter to a piece of junk! What a disappointment!

Great filter. water has been crystal clear for the month I've owned the filter. The biggest advantage over my old one is the water still ALL flows through the filter after a month of use, where my old one would start to flow over the filter after just 2 weeks of use!

I've had this unit since '02 or '03. One impeller replaced in that time. Other than that bulletproof. I hope they haven't become noisy as some have said (in case I buy another). I only have one tank a 35 gallon. Quiet and durable!

You will need to ensure that the intake strainer remains halfway up the height of the aquarium or higher. It is important to turn the filter off when doing any maintenance on the aquarium, such as water changes and allow some time for the sand to settle before turning it on.
