I use the Eheim 2215 on my 55 gal. fish tank, for about 2 months now. My tank is a planted tank, with 25 fish, (a little over stocked), largest are my 4 Angels. I have a mud substrate, with black gravel over that. Needless to say, my tank was always somewhat cloudy, and dirty looking too. I had been using a 2 Aqua Clear 70's. They just were not up to the job, and they were noisy too.
I was recommended this filter by my son in law, what has a 2217.
This filter is easy to set up, get started, run, does a wonderful job, and is quiet as the night. I never hear it running. I even have to check it from time to time to make sure it is running.
After hooking this baby up, my tank was so mush clearer in only one hour, it was truly amazing. Wish I had bought one earlier.
Eheim puts out a top of the line product and I would recommend this product to anyone. And I will over and over again. Buy it!!!!!
Thanks Eheim for a fantastic filter.

It's quite and cycles the tank well, but the plastic is very cheap. The elbow that connects the canister to the intake hose broke while I was putting it together. It would have cost $70 or more to replace that part so I decided to buy an entire new one so I would have spare parts. So, it broke before I even got it running and I ended up paying $300 for one canister since I didn't have time to send it back to Big Al's and leave the tank with one small extra filter for two weeks. It works great and is quite, but I'm concerned that the plastic will break again while I'm doing maintenance. So, it's a good pump, but it's not durable and you have to be very careful with it.

Comments about Classic Canister Filter with Media - 2217:

I have had fish for many years. I have had experience with only one canister filter brand, Rena Filstar and own the original XP3 and their "redesigned" XP. I have issues all the time with air getting in, and then horrible impeller grinding and having to release the air by opening the canisters to force water in, then making a mess all over the floor or inside my tank's stand cabinet.

I was so tired of this so I decided to give Eheim a try, and read up on the different models and loved the design on the classic line. So I got the second to the biggest they offer-2217 and have had it set up for a month and week now. Instructions are really worthless, Youtube is the best place to find out how to install and clean the filter, though I haven't cleaned it yet. It even shows you a way to help with priming for the first time, it took me 5 minutes to get it started once I got it fully set up, so priming is not impossible. Such a smart design; water goes in from the bottom, actually GOES through all of the media, and then exits the top! I don't understand how the water filters through other filters when both the intake and output on on the top of a filter? I don't believe water pressure can ensure that the water flows through all of the media in the individual compartments either.

Another good thing about the classic series-no compartments to block flow! I also like the fact that it isn't so pressurized to "force" the water through the compartment and then shoot the water in your tank at high speeds blasting plants, fish and sand in the process. The output of this filter is a nice gentle stream of water, nothing to disturb plants or move my sand around, or agitate the water...I use the power-head for that and can control the flow to where and when I want. I want the filter to FILTER water, not race it through as fast a possible and then shoot it out.

I love the Eheim, in just a month it has done wonders for my water, my corys are breeding (and I have had them for over 7 years and they never bred before!) my water quality is crystal clear too and my fish and plants are all benefiting from the Eheim 2217.

I also love the fact that it has the "quick release" valves so that you don't have to dissasemble the whole setup upon cleaning or re-prime the system at every cleaning. My Filstar filters have a "quick release" too but I have to fight to pull it out and then to put it back in, if it isn't sitting just so on top of the filter it won't unlock or lock back in place. I have a feeling that this is where I have a lot of air getting into the canister.

The best thing is how much you will save on filter media. Eheim comes with all of the media you need, and you can really have the media indefinitely if you rinse it and take care of it well (rinse in tank water). All I would replace would possibly the finishing floss pad (white one) but I would probably get a year out of it at least. I may add a bag of Seachem Purigen to it in the future when I remove my Filstar filters, or use some Seachem Renew as a chemical filtration. Right now my chemical filtration is in my Filstar XP3.

I love the Eheim so much that I am going to get another 2217 in a month or so. I want to give enough time for a good bacterial population to grow in my current Eheim before I get rid of the 2 Filstar filters I have. Or I may not wait and just transfer the bacterial media to the new Eheim...goodbye XP3 & XP!

Comments about Classic Canister Filter with Media - 2211:

I have a small 27 gallon planted aquarium. This is the first planted tank I have attempted. Previous experience with the Rena XP4 and how easily parts break on it made me choose the tried and true eheim. It is extremely easy to set up and the fish and plants reacted immediately to the new filter. Within minutes of setup my serpae tetras began spawning behaviors. As for the no media baskets, I actually think it is wonderful how the designed it not to need them. It leaves more room for bio media, filter pads, and even things like peat that media baskets can inhibit!

Comments about Classic Canister Filter with Media - 2215:

bought this filter about a year ago for my 75 gallon african cichlid tank,

the good about this filter is that it doesn't seem to ever clog, it is fairly quite doesn't show any signs of wear yet and it primes easily.

        now for the bad,

setting up:your going to notice that the ehiem hoses are way to stiff, nothing wants to sit properly, youll also notice that the ridiculous sized shut off valves are so heavy they near offset the weight of the filter( the filter seems as if could tip over with just a touch of the hose, the base isn't big enough for the height and pressure of the tubing and shut off weight).

next thing to annoy you will be the cheap little metal tabs that hold the filter seal tight, they are annoying and dont really "click" they kind of just lay there.

at your first filter clean you will officially hate this filter, in order to get the top off i have to sit on the floor with it in between my legs, twist and pull for a good minute or so since you dont want to crack the thin plastic shell. and finally when it pops off you get a nice taste of tank water, YUM. the media trays are these cheap little plastic separators, no basket design so you need to bag your media which is a bit of a pain.

Finally what really sucks about this filter is how it is put together, the intake strainer just barely hangs onto your intake hose. it comes with little cheap suction cups that ive already had to replace. then where the tubing attaches to the filter is a real PITA, some times it takes me 3 tries to get the tubing to attach to the thread of the connection, it also kinks on the return tube because of the weight of the shut off valve. the spray bar that it has isnt to bad but it doesn't really sit well since the stiff ehiem tubing is pulling it in some odd direction.

Overall thoughts: this filter does not flow hard, i doubt it puts out the 180 gph maybe around 100 or so. if you have a nice planted or tropical tank under 55 gallons then this filter will get the job done for you. but if your a cichlid keeper then get something that is easy to work on and flows alot harder like a fluval or even the new SUN SUN.

I bought a 65 gallon tank 6 months ago, was using two back of the tank filters, but my tank was always cloudy, no matter how many times I cleaned it. I just bought this pump, which was a breeze to connect, and with in 2 hours, the water was crystal clear, it's a miracle! My tank is over stocked with about 45 fish of different breeds. I use to have only about 30, but I bought 4 swordtails, and 4 dalmatian mollies, both ate live bearers, now I gave a tank full of the little guys, with more on the way! Although I've only had this filter for one day,I can't say enough about it. I've tried several different filters, not one of which worked as well, and as fast, as this one, I'd highly recommend it!

I use to have AC in my tank, until I decided to invest some money on eheim, around 1 year ago. Man, I should have done it before, the money I spent changing the media in the AC would have bought 3 of those. It barely need any maintenance, just the occasional media rinse and hose cleaning, which I do every 2-3 months, to be on the safe side. I just find out that the ceramic part of the impeller MUST be on the right side, otherwise the filter doesn't work properly. If you are having problems with this filter you must have been doing something wrong. Great buy and if I upgrade to a 55 gallon I'll get the 2215/17, for sure. You know, goldfishes...

A super simple design from the 1970's that is tried and true, and still sells like hotcakes today. Do your homework before you buy a canister filter. These do not have all the fancy bells and whistles(that only work the first few times anyway. Then end up leaking). That said, they are simple to prime with the double tap valves, and filter every drop of H2O that passes through them. If you want a filter that all you have to do is push a button to make it work, then don't get one of these, and keep a stash of dry towels nearby. Eventually you will need them. If you want a trusty old filter you can pass down to your children that doesn't leak and still works as well as the day you bought it, buy one of these classic series Eheim's.

Well designed, quality product. Extremely quiet. Though be aware the suction pipe is approximately 14 inche from bend to tip of screen which is too long for a 20g long. It just looks a little odd sticking high above the rim.

Have an Eheim 2213 working my 45 gallon african cichlid aquarium for the last 10 years. I change the media only 2 or 3 times a year which does take up some considerable time but nothing outrageous, it is whisper quiet and I have yet to purchase any replacement parts other than filter media or suction cups. A great GREAT product! Unsure how other people break parts before the first use. Would recommend to anyone with similar tank specifics as mine.

Please note that you will have the same issue with every canister filter available when being used for turtles. Most turtle aquariums are not filled to the rim and the lower the water level the more back pressure created.

With the 2213 EHEIM, does anything else need to be purchased to get it up and running? When it says it measures 6.3", does that include the tube that sticks out on the one bottom side?

The dimensions are an approximate and it is also taking into the consideration the elbow that sticks out at the bottom of the canister for the intake. The unit comes complete with everything that you will need to get the filter started including: All media, tubing, quick disconnects, and intake/exhaust attachments.

Is the canister (and parts) made from BPA-free food-grade plastic? Don't see much of a point filtering water with a filtration system made of materials that leech toxins.
