I use the Eheim 2215 on my 55 gal. fish tank, for about 2 months now. My tank is a planted tank, with 25 fish, (a little over stocked), largest are my 4 Angels. I have a mud substrate, with black gravel over that. Needless to say, my tank was always somewhat cloudy, and dirty looking too. I had been using a 2 Aqua Clear 70's. They just were not up to the job, and they were noisy too.
I was recommended this filter by my son in law, what has a 2217.
This filter is easy to set up, get started, run, does a wonderful job, and is quiet as the night. I never hear it running. I even have to check it from time to time to make sure it is running.
After hooking this baby up, my tank was so mush clearer in only one hour, it was truly amazing. Wish I had bought one earlier.
Eheim puts out a top of the line product and I would recommend this product to anyone. And I will over and over again. Buy it!!!!!
Thanks Eheim for a fantastic filter.

It's quite and cycles the tank well, but the plastic is very cheap. The elbow that connects the canister to the intake hose broke while I was putting it together. It would have cost $70 or more to replace that part so I decided to buy an entire new one so I would have spare parts. So, it broke before I even got it running and I ended up paying $300 for one canister since I didn't have time to send it back to Big Al's and leave the tank with one small extra filter for two weeks. It works great and is quite, but I'm concerned that the plastic will break again while I'm doing maintenance. So, it's a good pump, but it's not durable and you have to be very careful with it.

Comments about Classic Canister Filter with Media - 2217:

I am using this filter on my discus tank, 44g pentagon.. My Internal Top Fin 40 filters which I had 2 of weren't able to keep up with the bio load. and got dirty way too quickly.

I decided to try a canister filter and Eheim was my first.. I did a lot of research of other brands and came back to eheim because of the quality. These filters are a tad on the high price but have you ever heard the saying you pay more in the long run if you buy cheap.

Its been running for about 7 days now.. No leaks.. was a tad difficult to hook up because the instruction booklet sucks.. but once you know how to do it its easy.. It has SOO much bio media in it.. Puts any kind of Hang of back filter or internal to shame.

Its very quiet.. although noisier then bother of the internal filter it replaced.. but its just motor noise not impeller noise.. It deff isn't dead silent like some people claim.. They apparently don't know what quiet means.. Im going to take it out of my stand as I think the hollow stand just makes an Auditorium for the filter to be louder. Its in my bedroom.. So yes im picky on noise lol.

Big al's this is the first time I ordered from them.. I will continue to order from them after this. They were the cheapest online retailer for this filter and shipping was free.. They shipped it the next day after my order and I got it in 2 days.. WITH their free shipping..

My only complaint is they have limited shipping options.. no 2 day or 1 day or whatever.. But I cant complain lol free shipping and getting in it 2 days is simply awesome.. Thanks so much Big al

Comments about Classic Canister Filter with Media - 2213:

I have purchased 3 of these filters and I would not hesitate to purchase another one. It's a very simple and easy to use / maintain design and my tanks are always sparkling. I use one in my for my 10 gallon African Dwarf frog tank, and 1 for my ADA 60P (19 gal) planted tank. The best feature is the 2 quick disconnect couplings that you can place any where along the hoses for you inlet AND outlet. It allows you to remove the filter without draining the water in the rest of the system so when reconnected you just open the valves and start it up without priming. It also makes easy work of cleaning the intake supply or the outlet supply if you don't need a major cleaning. I would not use any canister filter that did not have this feature, it's really that much a convenience.

The very first 2213 I purchased was used and it was made in Germany, but I ended up buying a whole new filter because it was cheaper then buying parts I needed separately. The last 2 I purchased are made in China, and though they are just as quiet and are equal in GPH, I have had problems with the outlet connector cracking prematurely on two separate units - so that is why only 4 stars. Big Al's was great in taking care of the warranty so no issues there. I do make a practice of keeping canister filters in some kind of container in case leaking occurs and would recommend this as a standard practice for any canister filter, just for the potential implications when things don't go the way they are supposed to.

I installed this in a 55 gal. community tank which has serpae tetras, rainbow shark, barbed platys and fancy guppys. This does a great job of filtering, runs so quiet you have to put your hand over the outlet tube to make sure its running and it was easy to set up.

Comments about Classic Canister Filter with Media - 2217:

I have had fish for many years. I have had experience with only one canister filter brand, Rena Filstar and own the original XP3 and their "redesigned" XP. I have issues all the time with air getting in, and then horrible impeller grinding and having to release the air by opening the canisters to force water in, then making a mess all over the floor or inside my tank's stand cabinet.

I was so tired of this so I decided to give Eheim a try, and read up on the different models and loved the design on the classic line. So I got the second to the biggest they offer-2217 and have had it set up for a month and week now. Instructions are really worthless, Youtube is the best place to find out how to install and clean the filter, though I haven't cleaned it yet. It even shows you a way to help with priming for the first time, it took me 5 minutes to get it started once I got it fully set up, so priming is not impossible. Such a smart design; water goes in from the bottom, actually GOES through all of the media, and then exits the top! I don't understand how the water filters through other filters when both the intake and output on on the top of a filter? I don't believe water pressure can ensure that the water flows through all of the media in the individual compartments either.

Another good thing about the classic series-no compartments to block flow! I also like the fact that it isn't so pressurized to "force" the water through the compartment and then shoot the water in your tank at high speeds blasting plants, fish and sand in the process. The output of this filter is a nice gentle stream of water, nothing to disturb plants or move my sand around, or agitate the water...I use the power-head for that and can control the flow to where and when I want. I want the filter to FILTER water, not race it through as fast a possible and then shoot it out.

I love the Eheim, in just a month it has done wonders for my water, my corys are breeding (and I have had them for over 7 years and they never bred before!) my water quality is crystal clear too and my fish and plants are all benefiting from the Eheim 2217.

I also love the fact that it has the "quick release" valves so that you don't have to dissasemble the whole setup upon cleaning or re-prime the system at every cleaning. My Filstar filters have a "quick release" too but I have to fight to pull it out and then to put it back in, if it isn't sitting just so on top of the filter it won't unlock or lock back in place. I have a feeling that this is where I have a lot of air getting into the canister.

The best thing is how much you will save on filter media. Eheim comes with all of the media you need, and you can really have the media indefinitely if you rinse it and take care of it well (rinse in tank water). All I would replace would possibly the finishing floss pad (white one) but I would probably get a year out of it at least. I may add a bag of Seachem Purigen to it in the future when I remove my Filstar filters, or use some Seachem Renew as a chemical filtration. Right now my chemical filtration is in my Filstar XP3.

I love the Eheim so much that I am going to get another 2217 in a month or so. I want to give enough time for a good bacterial population to grow in my current Eheim before I get rid of the 2 Filstar filters I have. Or I may not wait and just transfer the bacterial media to the new Eheim...goodbye XP3 & XP!

Please note that you will have the same issue with every canister filter available when being used for turtles. Most turtle aquariums are not filled to the rim and the lower the water level the more back pressure created.

Yes, the Eheim 2211 comes plug and play and with sufficient media to get you started. If you wish to use carbon in the unit then you will need to purchase it as the unit doesn't come with any carbon.

The dimensions are an approximate and it is also taking into the consideration the elbow that sticks out at the bottom of the canister for the intake. The unit comes complete with everything that you will need to get the filter started including: All media, tubing, quick disconnects, and intake/exhaust attachments.
